My Story

Marquette Harbor Lighthouse in Marquette, Michigan
Yooper

n: a native or resident of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan — used as a nickname

I grew up in the U.P. of Michigan, short for Upper Peninsula. It’s a lot of small towns filled with wonderful people. My hometown of Ishpeming is just 15 miles from the southern shore of Lake Superior, and it’s hard to describe how special that place really is. I have a T-shirt that says, “If you haven’t been there, you’ll never understand.” Truth.

Even though I’ve lived in Minnesota since 2005, I’ll always be a Yooper! We’re a unique bunch and I embrace my roots with love.

I knew from the time I was a child that I wanted to be a writer. I wrote stories and poems from the age of was six, and later I “published” my own newspaper on my grandparents’ old manual typewriter.

I was also pretty good at science, though, and my mom had convinced me that there’s where I should focus my energy. I enrolled at Northern Michigan University as a biology major, but learned very quickly (like, on my second day) that the sciences were not for me! I promptly changed my major to English/Writing and, despite my mom’s tears, never looked back.

Since then, I’ve enjoyed a wonderful writing and editing career, and know that it’s the path that I’ve always been meant to travel. These days, I’ve left the day-to-day of the working world and am enjoying time at home with my kiddos, Noah and Natalee. They provide most of the inspiration for my writing these days!

I’m excited to take up space in one tiny corner of the Internet to share my stories. This blog is a place where we can connect about many different topics: motherhood and raising kids, dealing with the silly things our husbands say and do, struggling to get through each day, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. We’re all in this together, even if we don’t know what we’re doing.
